Post-Winter Car Care Advice

With the ‘Beast from the East’ raging on, it may feel like we’ll never get our warmer weather back. However, spring is just around the corner and soon you’ll stop having to de-ice the car each morning and snow will be a distant memory.

Worrying about how your car will handle the new, warmer weather may be the furthest thing from your mind. However, what you might not know is that the damage to your car caused by winter could cause you real problems in spring, if you don’t follow some easy car care advice to get it back to optimum condition.

At Monaco VW, we’ve seen our fair share of cars come to our VW specialists due to issues caused by driving in winter. We’ve put together some post-winter car care tips to help you avoid an unwanted trip to our VW garage (even if it is a beautiful spot to need to visit!)

Have Your Car Professionally Cleaned

Simply giving your car a spring clean just won’t do after it’s been driving on wintery roads. The salt put down on roads during icy months easily kicks up into your car’s undercarriage and can cause untold amounts of damage.

To avoid extensive rust and corrosion caused by road salt, have your car professionally cleaned at a car wash that will rinse the undercarriage thoroughly.

Check Your Wiper Blades

You may need a new set of wiper blades after all the hard work they’ve been putting in throughout winter. With ice and snow on your windshield, the rubber on your wiper blades will easily become worn – considering how common rain is in spring, you don’t want to be stuck without working wipers!

Check the rubber on your blades and test them; if your wiper blades are leaving smears you should have them changed as soon as possible.

Have Your Brakes Checked at a Garage

The same salt that could cause corrosion to your car can also wear your brakes down quickly. All the sludge and grime in winter can wreak havoc on your brake pads so, to be safe, you should have them checked professionally.

Get Your Battery Looked At

Along with your brakes, have your battery looked at to make sure its not been damaged by the colder months. It’s a simple check to make sure it’s charging properly and won’t leave you stranded with a drained battery in spring!

Top Up Your Fluid

Lastly, do a simple fluid top-up to get your car back in perfect running order. Due to your car having to work its very hardest in the colder months, you’ll find your fluids are used up much quicker than it usually would be. Things like wiper fluid and engine oil should be top priority.
